The National University of Ostroh Academy

The National University of Ostroh Academy

The National University of Ostroh Academy is the successor to the first higher education institution of the East Slavic peoples—the Ostroh Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy, founded in 1576 by Prince Vasyl-Kostyantyn Ostrogski with significant support from Princess Halshka Ostrogska. The academy’s educational model was based on the study of the seven liberal arts—grammar, rhetoric, dialectics, arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy—as well as higher sciences such as philosophy, theology and medicine, while students mastered five languages: Slavic, Polish, Ancient Hebrew, Greek and Latin. The institution was unique in combining Byzantine and Western European cultural traditions, contributing to the intellectual renaissance of Ukrainian society. Although the academy ceased to exist in 1636, its educational model later influenced higher education development in Kyiv. The revival of the Ostroh Academy in independent Ukraine began in 1994 following a decree of the President of Ukraine; in 2000 it received the status of a national university and in 2009 it was granted the status of an autonomous research higher education institution. Today the university structure includes several educational and research institutes, including those of Social and Humanitarian Management, Law named after Ionikiy Malynovskyi, Linguistics, International Relations and National Security, Information Technology and Business, as well as a Distance Learning Center. In 2025 the university successfully passed institutional accreditation by the Estonian agency HAKA within the framework of the project “Improving the Quality of Higher Education in Ukraine,” funded by the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV).
